Description
Beautiful vintage black glass cameo oval is set in a 1/2" holloware frame with overall measurement of 2-1/4".  The brooch features a hollow design 1/4" thick. This was done to lessen the weight of heavier jewelry. Used when large ornate frames and findings were used. Most common in the late Victorian period. The black glass cameo also lends itself to be a possible mourning piece.
Cameos are always excellent fashion accessory choices to reflect the gentle, romantic periods in our history. The term cameo originally meant carving a design into a single material in bas-relief. They were usually done using shell, stone or other suitable materials. More modern cameos feature laser, early plastics and composition for the carving base. Clean your cameos gently, using a brush or canned-air for crevices. Watch out for temperature changes that can cause cracking especially in gemstone or shell and always put your jewelry on after any sprays or oils.

For jewelry items, this includes the "softening" of vintage stones as well as normal age patina presentation and normal or vintage wear. , leaving that to the preference of the buyer. If there are any serious problems that reflect excess wear, damage, visible repairs, or concern, we will try to include it in the description. I do try to identify unmarked metals or stones but I am not a gemologist and cannot guarantee unmarked items. All items are sold as found in vintage age appropriate condition.
